Intellectual property and Human rights
· 3D encourages greater collaboration between human rights advocates and development groups in order to achieve a pro-development and human rights-consistent approach to intellectual property systems. This work currently focuses on using human rights rules and mechanisms to provide tools to advocates and policy-makers and ensure greater accountability in intellectual property policy-making.
· 3D monitors intellectual property rules in bilateral and regional Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and their impact on the enjoyment of human rights and is following discussions on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Development Agenda.

· 3D brings country-specific information to the UN human rights treaty supervisory bodies about the impact of trade-related intellectual property rules on access to medicines and human rights. In December 2005, 3D submitted a country briefing on the impact of FTA rules on access to affordable medicines and childrenīs rights in Thailand to the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

· 3D organizes expert meetings and holds seminars on intellectual property and human rights issues. The last meeting, an In-Depth Study Session on Intellectual Property and Human Rights, was held on 23-24 September 2005.

Practical Guide to the WTO for human rights advocates
· 3D published the first edition of the Practical Guide in December 2004. A Spanish edition of the Guide focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean will be published in the Spring of 2006.

WTO related activities
· 3D organizes events regarding on the WTO and human rights. The last one was a joint event with FIDH and IATP in parallel to the WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong in December 2005.

Study sessions
· 3D organizes study sessions and presentations on various trade and human rights themes. The last one focused on Intellectual property and Human Rights.

Methods of work:
· 3D raises awareness amongst human rights professionals about how trade rules affect human rights. This work currently focuses on bringing country-specific information to the UN human rights treaty supervisory bodies about trade-related intellectual property rules and access to medicines
· 3D publishes information tools including the Thread (Trade, Human Rights and the Economy - Action upDates) series of topical fact sheets on specific trade-related topics, designed for human rights advocates. 3D also publishes Policy Briefs on Human Rights for developing country trade officials and development NGOs, on how the human rights framework can be a useful tool for ensuring that trade rules are developed and implemented in a way that is equitable, ethical and respects human rights.
· 3D provides expertise on trade and human rights to groups around the world, on an ongoing basis, in response to requests or in areas where we feel that more information is needed.
