Seminar on the global land grab and human rights

On 16 May 2009 3D → Trade - Human Rights - Equitable Economy and the Project on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights organized The Global Land Grab: A Human Rights Approach. The seminar brought together over 50 people to share ideas about the rapidly accelerating investment in agricultural land for offshore food and fuel production. Specifically, this seminar sought to introduce a human rights angle to analyses of land grabbing. Participants assessed the trade and investment agreements that are enabling the trend, as well as the actual or likely consequences of land grabbing on the realization of human rights, particularly for small-scale farmers, indigenous peoples and other marginalized groups. Discussions also focused on potential responses to international land grabbing, particularly how human rights tools and mechanisms could support the development of human rights-consistent land investment policies.

On 11 Mai Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the WTO, and Olivier De Schutter, Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food joined for the debate "Is trade liberalization helping or hampering the realization of the right to food?" This discussion was organized jointly by the Mayor of Geneva and 3D as part of the Open Doors to the Palays Eynard – conferences, debates, exhibitions series.
