3D completes its work
Between 2001 and 2010, 3D -> Trade, Human Rights, Equitable Economy played a pioneering role linking organisations and individuals working on international trade policy with human rights advocates. 3D created a space for dialogue, trained officials and activists, developed new lines of research and lobbied for its ideas in the WTO and in human rights fora in Geneva and elsewhere. 3D -> Trade - Human Rights - Equitable Economy has been recognized and valued for its work, with more and more organisations following in the paths that 3D opened up.
Ten years ago, when 3D first embarked on exploring the potential of human rights to provide a guiding framework and accountability mechanisms for trade policy, few organizations or individuals could articulate the links between trade and human rights, let alone apply the human rights framework in favour of more equitable and sustainable trade policies. Through its workshops, publications, the internships it offered and its intellectual leadership, 3D has fostered the emergence of a new area of thinking. Today, many leading development organizations use a human rights framework to assess likely impacts of new trade or trade-related rules. More and more human rights advocates have integrated trade policy into their work and now effectively raise their concerns with trade policy-shapers. Development and human rights advocates are in regular contact and 3D is happy that its actvities contributed to facilitating these links and collaborations.
3D was imagined and created by Caroline Dommen, succeeded in 2009 by Violette Ruppanner. Paul Hunt chaired the association until June 2007, Carolyn Deere from July 2007 to September 2009 and Carin Smaller from October 2009 to October 2010.
It has been a pleasure for all those involved with 3D over the last ten years to participate in this exciting emerging area of thinking. 3Dīs publications and other resources on trade and human rights will remain available to readers on this website. 3D would like to warmly thank all organizations and persons who have accompanied, worked for and supported us during the years.
